Letters to the Editor

Q: Interest, or usury, is prohibited in Islam. As we are citizens of a non-Islamic country, whose economy is based on interest and capitalism, directly, or indirectly, we Muslims have to be a part and parcel of interest-based transaction.

Secondly, what about being employed in a Government bank? How is such an employee different from other government employees? Corporates, business houses avail loans on interest from banks to run and grow their businesses. How about being employed there?

The economy – in general – is turning ‘interest-based.’ It keeps marching forward so that it is now influencing non-financial sectors also. The world of those who treat interest as unlawful is shrinking fast. It has been so predicted by no less than the Prophet himself. However, the same Prophet has predicted that a group of his Ummah will always remain true to their faith. None will do these Muslims any harm.

We invite the faith-conscious members of the Ummah to remain steadfast, avoiding riba-dealings, and riba-transactions – to the extent of their knowledge.

When, upon study (which is incumbent upon an active Muslim), a transaction is revealed to be riba-based, they should avoid it. What reaches of it their nozzles, is unavoidable, and is hoped to be pardonable.

A bank is an organization whose main business is money, therefore, employment with them is prohibited. If someone is already in its employment, he may be on the lookout for an alternative. Allah’s help is obtainable.

As regards “Corporates, business houses who avail loans on interest from banks to run and grow their businesses,” if their business is predominantly in financial dealings, almost like banks, then, it is preferable not to work with them.

Q: About wife beating and editorial of YMD December 2021. Your reply to the annoyed woman was not satisfactory, sir. There are many more verses in Surah Nisa to address such issues.

You didn’t mention those; and there are NGOs called Mahila Mandals, who are addressing such domestic issues by way of counseling husband, wife and in-laws. If the accused didn’t yield they are prosecuted even, sir. Such an NGO is working in Belgaum district.

It was not intended to be a comprehensive article. It is also not a religious issue.

It is the irreligious, the Juhhaal in our times, who indulge in it. They are not only unmindful of the Shari`ah law; they are unmindful of even the Secular Law, and seem to be unmindful of the consequence.

We are as helpless as the Law-keepers are helpless to eradicate the habit.

Q: Jazakallahu Khair for your efforts in opening the eyes of people about the deceptions of the elite in so many ways right now. After researching their deception agendas, I’ve also come across another major issue that is very important for all Muslims: the way the Earth was created by Allah (swt).

“[He] who made for you the earth a bed [spread out] and the sky a ceiling and sent down from the sky, rain and brought forth, thereby, fruits as provision for you. So do not attribute to Allah equals while you know [that there is nothing similar to Him].” (The Qur’an, 2: 22)

“And it is He who spread the earth and placed therein firmly set mountains and rivers; and from all of the fruits He made therein two mates; He causes the night to cover the day. Indeed, in that are signs for a people who give thought.” (The Qur’an, 13: 3)

“And the earth – We have spread it and cast therein firmly set mountains and caused to grow therein [something] of every well-balanced thing.” (The Qur’an, 15: 19)

“The Day We remove the mountains, and thou wilt see the earth as a level stretch, and We shall gather them, all together, nor shall We leave out any one of them.” (The Qur’an, 16: 15)
