بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
The well-known Qur’an scholar, Maulana Abdul Kareem Parekh narrated to us that when a woman-hawker brought down her basket of oranges before him, he found her carrying a newspaper also. Surprised, when he asked the Dalit woman whether she knew how to read, she answered, “Ye Amcha paper hai! (This is our paper!).” That is, she bought it only to support her community cause, although she was illiterate.
How many of our educated and well-read class can say the same when it comes to supporting Muslim print media?
Mawlana Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi used to lament that there is not a single Hindi, or English, national daily published by Muslims in India. This was because “we do not consider supporting newspapers and magazines a religious duty.”
No surprise then that both the luminaries headed the Advisory Committee of Young Muslim Digest during their lives and strongly disagreed whenever they heard of the idea of closure because of financial difficulties. In fact, Ali Miyan always advised us to bring out a separate magazine for children, but we could not because of the costs involved.
We at the Young Muslim Digest are struggling each month to bring out the print edition of Young Muslim Digest which is necessary because millions of Indians have no access to the Internet, especially in smaller towns and villages. We are unable to meet the increase in costs of paper and printing. Many a times we have been on the verge of shutting down for financial reasons.
