Heaven and Hell
1. Abu Hurayrah (ra) says the Prophet (saws) said: “In Paradise will be trees under which a rider may ride for a hundred years but will not be able to cross it. Read if you like (from the Qur’an), `And unending shades.’” (4335)
2. Jabir (ra) says the Prophet (saws) was asked: “Will the people of Paradise sleep?” He replied: “Sleep is the sister of death. And there will be no dying in Paradise.” (Bayhaqi in Shu`ab al-Iman)
3. Abu Hurayrah (ra) says the Prophet (saws) said: “Seventy thousand of my followers shall enter Paradise without reckoning.” Upon this, a man stood up and said: “Pray for me, O Prophet, that I be one of them!” The Prophet (saws) prayed: “O Allah, make him one of them.” At this, another man got up and made the same request. The Prophet (saws) told him: “`Ukkasha (the first person) outstripped you.”
Notes:
The hadith shows that a believer should rush to good things and be always the leader rather than the follower in matters of virtue. Rather than waiting for others to try it out, a good believer should take the first step forward, bear the brunt of the acts and set an example in courage, trust in Allah (swt) and sacrifice in His path. The Qur’an has expressed kind regards for those who were the first to accept its call. (SIZ)
4. Hudhaifa (ra) says the Prophet (saws) said: “My Pond will be wider than the distance between Aila and Aden. And the cups more numerous than the stars. Its drink will be whiter than milk and sweeter than honey. And by Him in whose hands is my life, I shall drive away men from it as does a man drives away strange camels from his waters.”1 It was asked: “Messenger of Allah! Will you be able to recognize us?” He said: “Yes. You will come to me with faces, hands and feet shining as marks of ablution.” (4302)
Notes:
There could be two kinds of people that will be driven away from the Pond. One who would not be recognizable because of their neglect of the Prayers causing the brightness of the face to fade or disappear, and second those that would be turned away although they may bear bright faces because of their Prayers but would have committed terrible deeds. To them, the Prophet (saws) would like to serve, but he will be told that they do not deserve and so he will refuse.
5. Ibn Mas`ud (ra) says the Prophet said: “Paradise is nearer to you than your shoe-lace is to you…. and so is the Fire.” (Bukhari)
Notes:
That is, both Paradise and Hell can be lost, or gained, through something that you may regard as a very minor affair but of grave importance with Allah (swt). Therefore, take care, and do not utter or do anything, but that which will please your Lord. So long as you are sincerely making efforts to please Him you will not displease Him.
6. Abdullah ibn Mas`ud (ra) says the Prophet (saws) said: “I know the person who will be the last to come out of the Fire and the last to enter the Paradise: the man who will come out dragging himself; he will be told: ‘Go ahead and enter the Paradise.’ He will go to it and it will be made to look like it is filled up. He will return and say: ‘O Allah! I found it full.’ Allah will tell him: ‘Go and enter the Paradise.’ He will go to it and it will be made to look like it is filled up. He will return and say: ‘O Allah! I found it full.’ Allah will tell him: ‘Go and enter the Paradise.’ He will go to it again and it will be made to look like it is filled up. He will return and say: ‘O Allah! I found it full.’ Allah will tell him: ‘Go and enter the Paradise, for you shall have the like of what the world was, ten times.’ (Or – according to another version – “For you be the like of ten worlds”). The (astonished) man will say: ‘Do You make fun of me’? (Or – according to another version, ‘Are You joking with me – while You are the King?’)
