On the Trials of the Believer
Selections of Ahadith from a forthcoming collection called Miftah al-Ma`ani by Syed Iqbal Zaheer
1. `A’isha (ra) says, “The Messenger was struck by some illness. He began to turn left and right on his bed. I said, ‘Messenger of Allah, had one of us be doing this it is feared they would think he is under some spell.’ He replied, ‘A believer is treated harshly. No believer is struck by an affliction, or disorder, but Allah (swt) deletes his sins and raises him by a level.’”

Abu Hurayrah says the Prophet said, “Allah (swt) says: ‘When I try a believing slave of Mine, who does not complain to those who visit him, then, I release him from the disease (imposed by me) and exchange his flesh with a better flesh than his and a blood better than his blood. And what I fear of the Ummah is that the Qur’an will be opened, until a believer will read it, so too will the unbeliever and the hypocrite. Consequently, the believer will declare its lawful as lawful, seeking its truthful explanation, until the last verse.”

6. On Abu Hurayra’s authority, the Prophet said, “When a believer commits a sin it results in a black dot in his heart. If he repents, gives up, and seeks forgiveness, it is removed from his heart. But if he goes on, the dots go on until they cling to the heart. This is the Ra’n that Allah (swt) spoke of (83: 14): No indeed! But what they used to earn (of the evil deeds) has cast a layer of rust over their hearts.”
